Sunshine Water Damage is an independent publication about water damage in Florida, with guides for six cities and a small archive of articles. If something on the site is wrong, out of date or missing a piece of context that changes the meaning, this is the place to say so.

What we are, and what we are not

We do not carry out restoration work, quote for it, send anyone to a property, or pass a visitor’s details to a company that does. There is no phone number on this site because it does not take calls.

If water is coming in right now

This is general information about a water loss rather than advice about your property. If anyone is in danger, call 911 first.

  • Stop the water if you can do it safely: the main shut-off for the building, or the isolating valve for whichever fixture or appliance is leaking.
  • Stay out of standing water near outlets, cords or anything live. Cut the power to the affected circuits only if the panel is dry and you can reach it without standing in water.
  • Tell your insurer before the work starts. Florida homeowners policies generally require prompt notice of a loss and reasonable steps to limit further damage; the claims number is on the policy documents. The Florida Department of Financial Services explains how long an insurer has to respond.
  • Photograph and film everything before you move it or throw it away: the water line on walls and furniture, each room as a whole, and the make, model and serial number of anything that has to be replaced.
  • Start the drying quickly. Mold growth after a water loss is usually described in terms of a day or two, which is why restoration normally begins long before a claim is settled. Florida licenses mold assessors and remediators through the Department of Business and Professional Regulation, and the license can be checked.

What is on this site

The six city guides carry most of it: Jacksonville, Miami, Tampa, Orlando, St. Petersburg and Port St. Lucie. The articles are on the blog, and there is more about the site.
